Portugal: New Algarve-US route to start flights next May

From May 2024, the US airline United will fly a new route between Faro and New York/Newark, the president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) told Lusa on Thursday.

The new route will have four flights a week and will be the first route to connect the Algarve to the United States, a market that has been growing significantly in the region according to André Gomes.

Speaking to Lusa, Gomes said that in overall terms, up until August, the North American tourist market had grown by 29.3% compared to last year and 40% compared to 2019.

“This is extremely positive for the region’s expectations, given the impact that this market has on the Algarve, in terms of tourism and the presence of investments from major funds and brands,” he said.

Gomes said the route reflects the work of the RTA, Turismo de Portugal and Faro Airport, which have been working together to attract airlines interested in the connection between the Algarve and the United States.
